If your kitchen is in dire need of a makeover, but you don’t have the funds for a completely renovated space, then don’t worry! There are many different ways to refresh this room affordably and quickly. All you’ll need are some basic DIY skills.

We’re all about making the most of your spaces, especially if it can be done on a budget and without having to be a trades professional. Here we have covered some ways to make a few Home-Edits, while also being conscious about the money involved.

9 Ways to Update Your Kitchen on a Budget

1. Use the Old Layout

Removing units, replacing electric and plumbing or taking out walls are all expensive tasks when it comes to kitchen renovation. Save yourself some money and keep these things at a minimum, at least for now, until you can save up funds for the major items later in your kitchen makeover.

2. Keep Existing Appliances

If your existing appliances look OK and work effectively, then there’s no need to replace them. Moreover, even replacing your kitchen sink, it isn’t always necessary either. Try giving it a thorough cleaning, then use the money you save to buy a new faucet instead. Replacing an old or worn out faucet can give your sink a completely new look!

3. Re-Decorate

This is perhaps one of the most effective ways to give your old kitchen a facelift. Give your walls, woodwork and ceiling a couple of coats of paint in a light or neutral color. If you’re painting over stained wood, don’t forget to apply a tannin and stain blocker before the final coat to avoid stubborn bleed through which will cause extra headaches when tackling this project.

4. Recycle Old Furniture

If you like the style of your old furniture but aren’t keen on the color, why not upcycle it? For a change of scene, you could even buy some cheap, used furniture, and paint that as well. Many local areas will have second hand stores or consignment shops where you can get a great piece of furniture for a good price that might just need some love to bring it back to life.

5. Refresh Your Cabinets

If your cabinets are in reasonable condition, but you’re not keen on the color, don’t rip them out! They can be painted with cabinet paint. If you don’t want to do this job yourself, take your doors to be sprayed. It’ll be more costly, but it’s still cheaper than replacing all of your cabinets.

6. Remove Some Doors

To give your kitchen a new look, why not take some doors away to reveal the shelves inside? They could be painted, or even lined with paper to add some interest to your space. If you expose any screw holes while removing the cabinet doors and hinges, you can apply some wood filler to the holes, lightly sand them and paint the cabinets so they are all uniform and match.

7. Rejuvenate Old Countertops

Countertops are particularly prone to wear and tear over the years. Once they become worn or beat up, they really drag down the appearance of your kitchen. You don’t necessarily have to replace them though, they can be re-surfaced by a competent DIY’er. If resurfacing isn’t something you wish to tackle, there are less expensive options. One such option is using a countertop paint kit, or if that’s not your style they even make a peel and stick option like the one found on amazon HERE

8. Paint Tiles

Many people remove and replace tiles and backsplash when they are renovating their kitchen. However, this only leads to other work being needed, like repairing drywall and re-decoration. So why not keep your existing tile and just paint it? And if you don’t already have existing tile to paint, you can add some!

We’re not talking specifically about backsplash. You can tile the floor as well to give the room a HUGE improvement. While adding tile to a floor isn’t the most budget friendly, there are plenty of less expensive options as well, such as laminate or vinyl that could be used instead!

9. Replace Worn Fittings

Over the years, white switches and sockets can turn yellow. If you’re going to make the effort of re-decorating during your kitchen makeover, replacing these can make a big difference. New switches and sockets are cheap to buy and can be replaced by a competent DIY’er. Also consider replacing your light fixtures, blinds and curtains for those all-important finishing touches. There are endless possibilities found here on Amazon.
