With the irreversible consequences of the corona virus and the need for many to work from home as a result, more and more people will spend the majority of their time in their personal dwelling in the future. This opened up opportunities (and time) for people to focus on changing their homes interiors and to get some Home-Edits done that may have been put on the back burner.

Home focused search terms were undoubtedly higher in 2020 since many people were forced to stay home during the pandemic. This sparked a rise in new home trends going forward into 2021. Maybe it was just the reset we all needed to find that motivation to get up and make our living spaces uniquely ours. Here we will cover some of our favorites and even a few that we are less fond of. So let’s take a look at some home trends for 2021.

Eco Friendly

We all want to save the planet right? Well, we should! One of the easiest and most beneficial ways to do so is to use more Eco Friendly home products. In today’s world it’s even more important to update decor and home products with things that are more sustainable for the environment, landfills are overrun with plastics and other trash that will take an obscene amount of time to break down. An astonishing 6.3 Billion tons (yes billions with a “B”) of plastic lives in landfills at the time of writing this, and that number is growing by the day! More products are produced today that are Eco Friendly than ever before, from bamboo utensils to household cleaners that are plant-derived and free of harsh chemicals. This trend is one that is necessary and that future generations will thank us for!

DIY Projects

DIY projects, of course, are near and dear to our hearts at Home-Edits. We love to make things with our own hands, as these projects give a sense of accomplishment that’s hard to match in any other way. Since we are all spending more time at home, DIY trends are going to continue becoming more and more popular, like the spin art Courtney and I made last fall (pictured here)! Doing these projects, small and large, on your own are going to continue to creep into the forefront of focus for many home owners and even renters!

With the quarantine measures getting tighter and tighter, we don’t see DIY projects slowing down anytime soon. So take the time that you’re stuck at home and make the most of it by checking out things you can do to add some style and personalization to your space. And while you’re at it, check out our DIY and Tutorials Page!

Bidets

None of us like to talk about what happens in the throne room, but as we all know it’s a part of life. I’m sure most of you can remember the great toilet paper shortage of 2020?! Believe it or not, that awkward phenomenon brought about an entirely new appreciation for the Bidet. While these are quite popular in European countries, they are quickly becoming a staple for more and more American households as well. And we can’t forget to mention that they are considered to be healthier and provide better personal hygiene.

Smart Home Devices

Technology is at the forefront of our lives every day, which is why more people are becoming excited about all of the Smart Home Devices currently available. These devices are making lives easier and more convenient, and who doesn’t want that? 2021, in our opinion is going to see even more advances in smart technology to add to products already on the market. This trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

With devices like the Amazon Echo Dot and  Google Home becoming commonplace in today’s homes, we would expect to see more people taking advantage of the features available. These and other similar products can allow you to do everything from turning on lights and music, to running your entire home security system or thermostat with just a few voice commands!

Modern Minimalistic Designs

Simple and uncomplicated is the best way to describe this trend. Our lives are hectic enough on a day to day basis, which is probably one of the many reasons Modern Minimalist Designs are more popular nowadays. Straightforward and efficient in form and function is the epicenter of this design. Not overdoing the home décor to give your home a clean and sleek look can make a statement when executed correctly. Open and well lit spaces will put focus on any strategic material and textured surfaces so that they have their own personality without having to use much, if any wall décor.

Multipurpose Spaces

The need for working from home has increased the use of multipurpose spaces in a broad spectrum of careers. Don’t get us wrong, multipurpose spaces have always been a useful idea, but now they are becoming less of a bonus and more of a necessity. The major trend shift is of course the home office combo, such as a guest room that doubles as your home work space. Even a living room that has the area to also take on the role of an office nook.

As the home office becomes increasingly more valuable, there are still plenty of other double duty areas you can put focus on when space is limited. A sleeper sofa in a bedroom has the potential to maximize a space, while using a piece of furniture to break up a room into 2 different themes is also a trend that seems to be picking up steam.

More Natural Light

Ok we get it, getting more natural light into your home has always been a trend right? Either way it will continue to prosper as a home upgrade in the future. Everyone is spending more and more time at home among the pandemic which has turned up the light (pun intended) on bringing some extra sunshine indoors. Homeowners are tackling larger projects lately including adding larger windows, and skylights to brighten their space.

Abstract Home Décor

Somewhat going in line with a more modern theme, abstract home décor has been popping up all over the place. It very much has its own unique look to say the least. Geometric abstract décor has been all the more popular recently and looks to continue the same trend in 2021. Furniture, wall art, and even decorative pillows can all be found with some abstract flavor and they will give some design areas that little twist needed to change the design mood of a rooms layout.

Nostalgia Items

While it’s no secret that there has been a surge in retro types of items trending in 2020, it’s most likely one of those trends that will continue to make a comeback in the next year. Patchwork quilts, imperfect dinnerware, and even paint colors are very 90’s as of late. It’s not just the 90’s making moves though, many eras of a time past are brewing in the home décor world. While we may have more of a modern taste ourselves, we can’t blame anyone from wanting a touch of nostalgia from a simpler time in history to “slow down” their décor (in a sense), since many days it’s almost like we’re living in fast forward.

Floral Accents

When we say floral accents, what we mean are a combination of floral prints on different fabrics and décor to flower arrangement decorations. Floral prints are increasing in use for the first time in many, many years. Furniture  trends especially, are flaunting more vibrant floral colors, along with other home décor having a floral theme. The bright patterns and themes on furniture and décor has a habit of brightening up a room when it’s used as the focal point. Artificial flowers have also trended up in comparison to real flowers, not only do they last a lifetime, they are being used more often to create unique home décor in new and fresh ways by new DIYers.

Luxury Light Fixtures

Light fixtures can be one of the best ways to update your homes appearance. Moving along with minimalist designs, as well as a touch of an abstract vibe, even retro fixtures are becoming quite popular. We can see light fixtures as one of the more active trends in 2021. A lot of fixtures on the market now can have a big impact on the way your space can look, (although some tend to be expensive). There is a massive variety of looks to choose from to get that exact feel you’re going for down to a science. We see more and more homes using light fixtures as a way to keep the style of a room flowing, and at the same time add that personal touch to finish a room.

Accent Walls

Accent walls are an essential home upgrade that almost anyone can do! If you are a DIYer at heart, then this is the trend for you! These walls are fun to create and truly give your space the personality it deserves. Accent walls can really make a room pop, not to mention the options are absolutely endless. Simply painting one wall in a room a different color can have a significant impact, but if you really want it to stand out you can create designs in your paint. Let your imagination run wild with this one and you may be surprised at what you can come up with using only a roll of masking tape and paint rollers!

Using laminate on an accent wall is another up and coming way to give a room some style. It’s fairly simple to accomplish and we have a Tutorial, “How To Install Laminate On An Accent Wall” that will show you exactly how it’s done. Another one of our favorite ways to accent a wall is making a design out of different materials such as painted wood planks, arranged in a geometric pattern, or even adding some shiplap.

Wall Sconce

One of the hottest selling products online continues to be wall sconces. This has brought about a huge selection of sconces to choose from and the variety keeps growing. While these may not be for everyone, they can definitely help set a room apart from the others and add to the ambiance in a positive way. Many times you can even find a DIY for making your own! There is also a kit available for one of the best selling sconces if you want a set for yourself HERE!

Artsy Inspired Wall Mirrors

Hopefully wall mirrors will find a new place among homeowners in 2021. Many mirror sets are now designed with a much more artistic feel. We think oversized mirrors will take a foothold as one of the better trends for home décor in the next year, along with panels of mirrors and collages. Mirrors have always been a staple for many decorators and used as art, something that catches the eye with a refined and comfortable look and feel about them.

Full Room Remodeling

Maybe we are noticing more things in our homes that could be more appealing, or it’s the want to give our spaces more of a personal touch. We believe it’s mostly credited to spending more time at home. Whatever the case, many expect to see an increase in full makeovers of our homes. Completely removing walls and changing the layout of entire floors is becoming more feasible while we are spending more time staring at our walls. Complete renovations are becoming more common, with a wealth of knowledge on the internet and an increase of homeowners and renters willing to get their hands dirty, the rate of complete remodeling should see a significant upturn.

This list is just a small number of trends that will continue into 2021, with the way 2020 has gone we are glad to finally look forward and get past the coronavirus and the whole pandemic. Hopefully we see some light at the end of the tunnel with all the madness that has ensued this past year. With that said, we just want to say farewell to 2020 and onto a brighter future.
